******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF BLUEGRASS MUSIC ********************

Bluegrass music is a sub-category of country music and a style of American roots music. Bluegrass was inspired by the music of Appalachia in the eastern part of the United States. It has a variety of roots from Scottish, Welsh, Irish, and English traditional music, and eventually influenced by African-American music by the infusion of jazz elements.
Immigrants from Ireland and the United Kingdom reached Appalachia in the 18th century and brought musical traditions from their homelands. These musical traditions were mainly comprised of Scottish and English ballads and dance music.

In Bluegrass, just like in some styles of jazz, one or several instruments take turns to play the melody while other instruments do accompaniment. This approach is illustrated in tunes called “breakdowns” which are defined by quick tempos and remarkable instrumental dexterity.
The typical instruments used in traditional Bluegrass are mostly acoustic string instruments (unlike in mainstream country music) like resonator guitar (Dobro), harmonica, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, five-string banjo, and string bass (upright bass).

Bluegrass music has amassed a broad following across the world. Bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe defined the genre as: “Scottish bagpipes and ole-time fiddlin’. It’s Methodist and Holiness and Baptist. It’s blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound.”
