STAND-UP COMEDY HISTORY:
Stand-up comedy is a type of comic style where a comedian performs in front of a live audience, speaking directly to them. The performer is typically known as a comic, a stand-up comic, a stand-up comedian, or simply a stand-up. In stand-up comedy, the comic usually recites a group of humorous stories, jokes or one-liners in hopes of delivering a good show. These are typically known as monologues, acts, or routines, and some comedians have been known to use props, music, or magic tricks to enhance their acts.

The feedback from the audience is immediate and can be detrimental to the performer’s act if the comedian doesn’t deliver a consistent stream of laughs throughout. These acts are typically performed in comedy clubs, bars and pubs, nightclub, colleges and theaters.

In the modern sense, a few notable comedians that were quintessential to the development of stand-up include Jack Benny, Bob Hope, and Fred Allen. They all performed during the early part of the 20th century and spoke directly to the audience as themselves without props or costumes.

The 50s and 60s witnessed the introduction of social satire incorporated into comedy acts, as well as the expanding of both the language and boundaries of stand-up comedy, venturing into politics, race relations, and sexual humor; and over the years TV shows like Saturday Night Live and comedians like Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy and Ellen DeGeneres have ushered in a new wave of comedy.
