******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF COOL JAZZ MUSIC ********************

Cool jazz is one kind of modern jazz music that emerged soon after the Second World War. Cool jazz is defined by its lighter tone and relaxed tempos, as opposed to the bebop style. Cool jazz usually uses formal arrangements and infuses elements of classical music.

The term “cool” pertains to a certain number of post-war jazz styles which used a more subdued course than what is seen in other contemporaneous jazz idioms. Maurice Gerow, Paul Tanner, and David Megill suggested, “the tonal sonorities of these conservative players could be compared to pastel colors, while the solos of [Dizzy] Gillespie and his followers could be compared to fiery red colors.” The term “cool” started being associated with this type of music sometime around 1953, when Capitol Records released their album “Classics in Jazz: Cool and Quiet”.

Mark C. Gridley, who wrote for All Music Guide to Jazz, identified four sub-categories that encircles Cool jazz. These categories were soft variants of bebop; advanced swing; West Coast jazz; and “exploratory music with a subdued effect”.

Lee Konitz and Ted Gioia have each identified cornetist Bix Beiderbecke and saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer as the predecessors of the Cool jazz scene. Saxophonists like Lester Young draw a huge influence from Trumbauer through “his smooth and seemingly effortless saxophone work.”
