******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF DANCEHALL Reggae MUSIC ********************

Dancehall reggae music is a music classification under the Jamaican popular music of the late 1970s.
Dancehall was derived from the dance halls in Jamaica where homegrown sound systems played many popular Jamaican recordings since the 1940s among parts of Kingston city including Rose Town, Denham Town and Trench Town. A multitude of political and social changes that happened in the late 1970s influenced this music style, and themes that include repatriation, social injustice, the Rastafari movement blended with lyrics that discuss sexuality, violence, and dancing.

In a musical sense, Sugar Minott has been credited for fire-starting the Dancehall trend which used 1960s-based rhythms. This Dancehall era produced renowned reggae musicians like Barrington Levy, Junior Reid, Frankie Paul, Don Carlos, Triston Palma, Gregory Isaacs, Al Campbell, and Bunny Wailer.

The Caribbean music scene has been brought to a whole new level when the French Caribbean group Kassav started using MIDI technology and performed digital format recording. The 1985 hit of King Jammy, “(Under Me) Sleng Teng” by Wayne Smith received immense popularity. Although people Regard this song as the first reggae digital rhythm in reggae, earlier digital productions have existed even prior, particularly Horace Ferguson’s single “Sensi Addict” (Ujama) which was produced in 1984 by Prince Jazzbo. The ultra-hit “Sleng Teng” rhythm has been utilized in more than 200 recordings since then.
