FUNK MUSIC HISTORY:
Funk music originated in the mid-60s when African American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music that was an admixture of soul, jazz, and R&B. Funk was quintessential to the formation of many successive genres and generally followed the same composition:

  • Strong, rhythmic groove of a bass lines (similar to Motown)
  • Consists of a complex groove with rhythm instruments playing interlocking grooves
  • Uses the same extended chords as Bepop jazz

A genre known as Deep Funk was the in-genre during the 60s, but unlike traditional funk music, the sounds of deep funk were more raw, gritty, and soulful.

And as was mentioned, funk music played an essential role in the development of many subgenres that followed. From its sounds to its rhythms and lyrics, funk was an inspiration for generations thereafter. In the 90s, there was a further extension of hip-hop and funk that was known as G-funk, which was a fused subgenre of gangsta rap and funk.

You can see (or hear, rather) remnants of funk in disco music, as well as having a heavy presence in Hip Hop music. Hip Hop artists regularly sample old school funk sounds and music. With hip hop’s heavy presence in mainstream music today, and its unparalleled influence on the future development of music in this era, none of this would be possible without the help of funk music.
