This app Grab ‘n’ Read is a Reading Assistant software specially designed for the blind/visually-impaired. The app allows the user to take photos of various objects in the environment, e.g. signboards, extracts and recognizes the text messages on the objects, and reads aloud the recognized text using the built-in Text-to-Speech engine. Thus, the visually-impaired people including the blind can virtually “read” the text messages through voice. Those who are suffering from dyslexia would also find this app useful.

The user’s operation is quite simple - just press the Grab button.

This application runs on Windows 10 systems, and supports both keyboard and touch panel. The voice and its speed need to be set in the system setting before starting the app since the app follows the system voice setting. The current supported languages are English, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, while the user interface messages are limited to English and Japanese so far (volunteers are welcome).

There is no network connection at all. (The Windows environment ensures it since the Internet Capability is turned off in the app development.)

Windows Phone version is available under the name of “Grab ‘n’ Read for WP”.

文字読み上げカメラのアプリケーションです(Windows 10用)。視覚障害者が看板やチラシなど様々な物体の写真を撮ることで、書かれた文字を認識し、音声に変換して聞くことができます。識字障害者にも有用かもしれません。

操作は簡単で、グラブボタンを押すだけです。アプリを起動する前に、システム設定/時刻と言語/音声認識のメニューで、使用する声と速度の設定が必要です。現バージョンは、日本語、英語、フランス語、ドイツ語、ロシア語、中国語、韓国語に対応しています。

インターネット接続は一切ありません。(アプリ開発時にインターネット機能を使わない設定にしているので、Windowsの実行環境が確実にアクセスをブロックします。)

Windows Phone版は Grab ‘n’ Read for WP という名前で提供されています。
