MOTOWN MUSIC HISTORY:
Motown music has gone through a major transition from where it originated from to the modern sound of today. Motown music stemmed from Detroit in the 20th century and generally follows the same composition:

  • Use of the tambourine along with the drums
  • Distinctive melodic and chord structure
  • “Call and response” singing style

Motown is also an American record company that played an essential role in the integration of the genre into the mainstream. Being an African American-owned record label and sound, it had reached a significant level of crossover success into the popular music scene.

Most of the Motown sounds came from the use of overdubbed and duplicated instrumentation, and many Motown songs regularly featured two drummers instead of one, as well as three or four guitar lines.

One of the major reasons for Motown’s success into the mainstream culture was the popularity and acclaim of the tight-knit studio group known as the Funk brothers; these musicians were responsible for recording a large amount of instrumentals for the majority of the Motown albums and recordings of the time.

Established in 1959, Motown Records was the company’s main label for mainstream R&B/soul music (as well as hip-hop music today). Some notable Motown artists include the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Smokey Robinson. Together, they helped maintain the stardom and popularity of the sound and style of Motown and helped to establish is as a staple in popular music.
