MyFlashWords is a great way for to learn to read because you can customize it to your child’s interests and these interactive flash cards teach phonics and whole language with the built in sounds. You can hear the phonetic sounds of each letter by scrolling over them. For sight words you can press the microphone button to hear the word and check yourself. You can have as many flashcards as you want by adding new lists easily. Your child can use the recording feature to hear how they are saying the word which can also help with speech. MyFlashWords consists of two learning pages and a page that allows for the addition of new words and new word lists.
Is your child interested in Super Heroes? You can create a list of Super Heroes, Sidekicks, Villains gadgets and the cities in where all the action takes place. Maybe you’re going to go to the zoo you can create a list of animals they will see there. Maybe they have a favorite cartoon shows you can create a list of the shows and the characters. The point is the possibilities are endless because you can create word lists for anything. And when you create something your children are interested in they will learn faster.
The Lesson Page
The Lesson page helps teach how the letter combinations work. Letter combinations like CH, TH, SH, WH, OO, OE, EA, and IE are highlighted together when pressed. Other vowel modifiers are also linked together like the A and E in BAKE.
The Lesson Page also gives the chance to work on speach patterns. Using the Edit Page you can record your voice. The Practice Page allows your child to record his/her voice and then both your voice saying the word and their voice is played back to them.
The Test Page
The Test page displays four random words from the selected word list and says one of the words. When the correct word is pressed the next set of words is displayed. When a wrong word is pressed the text color changes. There is also a score that is kept in the upper right hand of the screen. The Test page knows the concept of a homophone. So if you have two words that sound the same in your list and they are linked as homophones in the Edit Page they will not come up in the same word grouping as long as there are enough words in your list.
The Edit Page
The Edit Page gives the ability to create and manage word lists. It allows you to set homophones for those words in a list that sound the same but are spelled differently. The Edit Page also allows you to record your or your child’s voice saying the words so they can practice with a voice more familiar to them.

I found that my son enjoys playing on the computer more than he liked practicing reading. With this app I can coax him into practicing his reading more.
