Description

What Is Visualization? Visualization means ‘‘to imagine’’. Visualization is an important aspect in everyone’s life. A movie maker visualizes the script before starting the project. A graphic designer may use lot of visual effects so that the viewers/readers are hooked to it. Visualization is a common phenomenon in everyone’s lives. A student imagines about the examination at the time of preparation a sportsman visualizes about the big match at the time of practice or a business man visualizes how big his business can grow and so on. Visualization acts as a blueprint of the final product. It is well known fact that lawyers/detectives ask lot of questions and probe into the issue - ‘‘What were you doing that time what exactly did you see what was the time etc’’. This kind of probing questions on the past happenings would activate the schema of the person so that he could recollect many more things. In short stimulating the brain by recollecting facts could be termed as schema. Many learners also admitted that if the present learning is linked to the past learning by citing examples it yields to quicker and simpler learning. This is because the schema is stimulated and it would be easy to learn new things as well. Visualization could be also termed as mental training. And this mental training is required not just for students businessmen or employees of an organization but also for sportspersons. Though physical strength is the attribute for many sports the importance of mental training in it cannot be ruled out. A golfer might visualize the perfect stroke repeatedly to mentally train himself for the perfect shot. In cricket we see batsmen swinging their bat and play imaginary shots just before getting into action. This is because of mental preparation before getting into action. This is very important to instill confidence among them. The captains and coaches of any team have to visualize about the forthcoming match and need to prepare accordingly. A classic example of this scenario is the Indian Cricket Captain MS Dhoni. His out of the box thinking in many crucial matches made him one of the best captains the country has ever produced. We have witnessed in few sports based movies where excellence in the game is not just the criterion to win the matches. Let’s take popular bollywood movie ‘Chak De’ for instance. The hockey team which represents the nation has many talented players. However they couldn’t gel as a team. In this case the coach of the team with his shrewd thinking binds the team and also motivates the players during the match with his epic speech. The movie just proved that talent combined with sharp thinking yields to best results. Another classic example is from the movie ‘Lagaan’ where the British officer challenges the protagonist for a cricket match. The challenge was just made to humiliate the villagers that they can never compete with the British in this game. But the hero sees the bigger picture - That if he could form a team and practice hard the entire village need not pay the tax as per the condition. Bhuvan’s (lead character’s name in the movie) visualization must be complimented here. It was only because of visualization combined with bravery he could agree to such a big challenge in such a short span of time. One more popular movie Om Shanti Om a struggling actor (played by Shah Rukh Khan) dreams of getting an award and already visualizes that he receives an award for the best actor and rehearses for the speech to be given at that time! Regarding the visualization in sports there are many studies conducted. In one of them the Russian scientists divided the Olympic athletes on the basis of physical and mental training. The study produced the following results: 1)1st study group was given 100% physical training. 2)2nd study group was provided with 75% and 25% mental training.
