What is MCC and how does it affect your money?
MCC (Merchant Category Code) is a four-digit number assigned to a merchant that classifies the type of services it provides. Every time you pay with a credit card, the transaction contains the MCC of the merchant, so your bank knows in which category (restaurants, barbershops, etc.) your money was spent. This is how cash back and award point programs work.
